Second half: English Session

TMOM continued from JP session, TM Y-zaki, very fluent, calm with appropriate time management skill.

Word of the day “Incredible” TM T-be.

It was interesting to know why you came up with this word for this session. It came when you were introduced with the “Three Cs”(Confidence, Competence, Credibility) necessary as an assistant trainer during your company’s training course in Malaysia.

We had several of our fellow TMs use this term during the English session.

Prepared speech #3 Ice breaker TM H-gawa the “(title of the speech was his name. Not indicated here for confidentiality)”

It was incredible in the sense that he pushed himself to do the ice breaker in English. I was so happy to see him facing up to the challenge and his performance was magnificent. He tried his best not to use notes. I can see that he has the character to succeed in toastmasters. He is courageous.

A perfect example of chronological self-introduction with strong and confident tone of voice. Hard to believe that this was his first speech!

Prepared speech #4 research your topic “For better decision making” TM S-mura

The topic can never be more pertinent to the audience. Everyone has to make decisions and often times we never know what decision is best when we are making that decision. It makes perfect sense to take more care in the process of decision making. It may be right even, to say that there is no such thing as “the right decision”. I should keep his message in mind when I discuss issues at work, at TMC and other occasions.

It is amazing how TM S-mura makes progress in his ability to present English speeches. I can tell his speech is getting stronger and stronger every time I listen to his speech. Gosh, I’d better work hard so that I can follow his footsteps!

Note: For those of you who are interested, TM S-mura let me have a look at the book that inspired him to do this speech “Why great leaders don’t take yes for an answer. Managing for conflict and consensus” Michal A. Roberto.

Evaluation for speech #3 (TM H-gawa) by TM A-ki

What an encouraging evaluation. Of all the great things in his evaluation, I was impressed with how he showed the next step for TM H-gawa. It was very informative to let him know that for the next project “Organize your speech”, he is to focus on structure of his speech. I am sure H-gawa san was deeply encouraged by the strength he may even have not recognized himself until TM A-ki pointed out today.

Table Topics run by TM N-se

Today’s topic proceeded around the keyword “Choice”.

I totally enjoyed the questions and answers. It might have helped if TM N-se had written down the questions so that he did not need to wander around trying to figure out the correct phrase.

I did like the way those who were picked to answer clarified the questions before answering.

TM N-se had good control of time and checked with TMOM if he had time for the third topic.

Q1: If you were to choose just one item to bring to an abandoned isolated island in the middle of an ocean, what would you choose?

A1(TM S-mura) A knife so that I can get food, make something, such as a boat, and in worst case scenario, kill myself!

Q2:If you were given a second life after your current one, which would you choose, to be a man or a woman?

A2(TM T-be) A woman because I am happy leading my current life as a woman. There are various benefits being a woman.

Q3: If you were given a second life after your current one, what creature would you choose to be?

A3 (TM N-i) I would like to be a sea elephant because they make huge harems! I cannot have that may wives and children if I remained human. The leader of the harem has very strong leadership and they have to fight to become a leader and maintain his status.

(TM N-i, you made everyone in the room laugh!)

Evaluation for speech #4 (TM S-mura) by TM N-pal

Thank you for taking up the role after the TM who was originally assigned for the job could not make it to this session.

I shared the same view with Mr. N-pal that the topic of the speech was superb. It was relevant to all of the audience.

It was surprising to hear TM N-pal say the same thing I had in mind as a way of further brushing up TM S-mura’s speech. I can’t help but imaging that his speech becomes formidable when his facial expression loosens up just a tiny bit more.

I know its hard but if TM N-pal could lift his face and keep more eye contact, I think the evaluation would be more effective.

General Evaluation

Grammar report: TM N-i made a good point in some of the grammar use over the term“Relaxed”. He tried to find out the right way to use it but couldn’t in the limited time. I looked up the dictionary and the word “relaxed” was registered as a past tense and present perfect form of the verb “relax” and as an adjective. You could say “If you could relax a bit more…”and “Try to be more relaxed.”, and so on.

Guest Comment from Odawara TMC TM T-naka

He thanked us for coming to Odawara TMC’s very first meeting two weeks ago. There were about thirty participants at the meeting.

He looks forward to seeing more participation from SBTC.

I got a comment from TMOM Y-zaki that I could have commented on those who were absent without notifying the members at the meeting. I totally agree. Taking this opportunity, I’d like to encourage members to contact other members when there was a sudden change in your schedule which requires our meeting roles to be adjusted.
